Solat - 2D photo Installation
By Azzah Sultan
In this art piece I look into Islamic Art patterns and create my own prayer rug in a form of a mihrab (prayer niche). Creating my own space of solitude and prayer, this space helps oneself to isolate themselves from the hectic distractions all around, thus focusing on praying to God.

"We Are Not The Same"

by Azzah Sultan

In this series of photographs I capture five Muslim women in their own space. The media has always portrayed Muslim women as oppressed and that we all dress and look the same. Through building friendships here in New York City this project looks in depth into breaking stereotypes and showing how we as Muslim women aren’t the same. Although we do share the same faith we have our own interests, personalities, cultures, styles and hobbies.

"Dua"
2D Final project
Acrylic on wooden panel.
So this was my first time painting a girl with a hijab and showing it to a group of people. I had always been scared before that it would be seen negatively and avoided it through out my time in art school. But I gathered the courage to do it finally. The thing is if you paint people of color or of different religious background people will always see the painting about that, so i knew people would see this about muslim girls and only for that, so I used that to my advantage. Proposing the idea that i wear it for my faith and what I believe in. Let me tell you how uncomfortable it was because people felt uncomfortable critiquing on it because they didn’t want to seem “ignorant or against my religion” and i said no, say what you think. So we got into the politics of the hijab and Muslim girls in America and it was such a good ways to discuss these issue. The teacher got a bit flustered but I stood my ground and said these issues are such as important as discussing Psychoanalysis and other theories or issues. So Alhamdulillah this painting made me stronger and I feel like I wanna pursue paintings like these in the future Inshallah.
